Tbilisi Travel Guide

1 | Arrival & Transportation

Most international flights arriving in Tbilisi tend to land early in the morning. So, do not worry; this is quite common and is part of the travel experience. In the arrival zone, there are three men’s, three women’s WCs, three mother and baby rooms, and 3 WCs for passengers with restricted mobility, and in the meeters hall, one man’s, one women’s WC, one for passengers with limited mobility, and one “mother and baby” room. All the restrooms are marked with signs, and directions are provided on the information banners throughout the airport.

2 | Banking & Currency Exchange  

The branch offices and ATMs of various banks are at the service of the passengers in all airport zones. The airport also provides a vast selection of foreign currency exchange offices in arrival and departure terminals. Currency exchange services will also be available at the hotel, offering better rates compared to those at the airport. To travel from the airport to the conference venue by taxi, the cost will be approximately GEL 50.

Mobile Data & SIM Options: Even though free Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal to help you stay in touch, in Georgia, having mobile data for navigation and on-the-go translation with Google Translate is essential. Acquiring a local SIM card, preferably from Magti, is highly recommended, especially their 7-day Unlimited Data Package purchased via their app for 9 GEL, making it a total of 20 GEL with the SIM and providing a reliable connection for your needs.

3 | Information Desks

Information desks are in the center of the Departure and Arrival Terminals and are staffed 24 hours a day. You can receive information on flights, the terminal layout, and facilities in person and by phone 24 hours a day.

4 | Hotel Transfer Information

After a brief walk to the luggage belt and then to the arrivals area, complimentary luggage trolleys are conveniently accessible. For your transportation needs, a taxi service is available just outside the terminal (FlyTaxi), just at the curbside of the Arrival Hall and provides 24-hour service to the passengers. The journey time to the city center takes 20-30 minutes though travel times may vary depending on the time of day and traffic conditions. Taxi fares are determined by the taxi meter indication ranging from 40 to 60 GEL. Please note that payment in USD is not accepted, so it is advisable to exchange around 30-40 USD for GEL at the Airport as a precautionary measure to ensure a hassle-free transfer to your hotel. Nonetheless, the most recommended and convenient transportation option is to use the Bolt app, which is widely preferred by travelers. 5 | Taxi Wisdom in Tbilisi

When it comes to everyday taxi use in Tbilisi, an app is essential. Apart from the locked-in fares, it saves you from having to provide directions and further communication mishaps. Estonian app - Bolt is highly recommended with Google-powered maps, English-friendly street names, and landmark input, making getting around the city as easy as pie (or Khachapuri). Plus, Bolt demands a high standard of vehicles, so you’ll find most cars new with working seat belts and AC (unlike some other Taxi options). Payment can be made by cash or card – even an international card will do the trick.  

You might also want to download a backup app such as Yandex. Like Bolt, GPS for Yandex works perfectly and the address recognition is great. Plus, when time is of the essence, you can opt for "The fastest" car, ensuring the closest available vehicle. However, most locals steer clear of Yandex because the company is Russian-owned.

6 | Health considerations

Tbilisi can be dusty, particularly in outdoor areas where smoking is common. Given the city's hilly terrain, it's wise to pack comfortable footwear if you plan on walking extensively. Rest assured, Tbilisi boasts well-equipped medical facilities, including hospitals and clinics. However, it's worth noting that not all prescription medications are readily available in Georgia. Therefore, it is advisable to take the necessary precautions as appropriate.

7 | Language

Language is rarely a barrier in Tbilisi, as you'll find a surprising number of people, particularly the younger generation, who are proficient in English. Whether you're interacting with store check-out staff or the attentive wait staff in restaurants, English is often spoken fluently. Moreover, Russian is the second language of choice, especially among the older population.

8 | Water

While water from the tap is safe to drink, it may be advisable to stick to bottled water during a short visit to Tbilisi. Still, water (non-carbonated) is available in some stores and restaurants in Tbilisi, but only a few are popular. If you are interested in natural mineral waters (carbonated), there are two famous brands– Borjomi & Nabeghlavi – available everywhere.

We chose three major museums close to the conference venue as we believe these institutions stand as portals to the past, offering a profound glimpse into the essence of Georgia's heritage and artistic soul.

Georgian National Museum is a scientific and educational institution dedicated to preserving and showcasing a remarkable collection spanning natural and human history. This collection encompasses the country's history, including ancient animal fossils dating back 40 million years and prehistoric human remains from Dmanisi, providing crucial evidence of human existence beyond Africa dating back 1.8 million years. Notably, the museum boasts a treasure trove of unique artefacts from the late 3rd millennium B.C. to the 19th century A.D. in its Treasures collection. The walking distance from the conference venue to the museum is 15 mins.  

The Soviet Occupation exhibition is located on the fourth floor of the Georgian National Museum. It represents seven decades of Soviet rule in Georgia (1921- 1991). The museum is also dedicated to the history of Georgia's anti-occupational, national-liberation movement and the victims of Soviet political repression throughout this period.

Old Town (Dzveli Tbilisi): You can begin your journey in the heart of Tbilisi's historic center, where cobblestone streets wind through charming alleys and past centuries-old architecture.
